Dr. Saul Samuel Jacob Ratulangi (born in Tondano, North Sulawesi, November 5, 1890 - died in Jakarta, June 30, 1949 at the age of 58) is an Indonesian independence activist from North Sulawesi, Indonesia. He is an Indonesian national hero. Sam Ratulangi is also often touted as a multidimensional figure. He is known for his philosophy: "The tou timou tumou tou" which means: new humans can be called as human, if it can humanize human beings.
Sam Ratulangi was also the first governor of Sulawesi. He died in Jakarta in a position as hostage prisoner on 30 June 1949 and was buried in Tondano. His name is enshrined in the name of the airport in Manado namely Sam Ratulangi Airport and North Negeri State University in North Sulawesi, Sam Ratulangi University.
Sam Ratulangi started his education at the Dutch Primary School (Europesche Lagere School) in Tondano, then he went to Hoofden School, Tondano and completed the Technical School Koninginlijke Wilhelmina School (currently called SMK Negeri 1 Jakarta Budi Utomo) machine, Jakarta in 1908. In 1915, Sam Ratulangi succeeded in obtaining a certificate of an exacting science teacher (Middelbare Acte Wiskunde en Paedagogiek) at the University of Amsterdam (Universiteit van Amsterdam), The Netherlands. In the same year, he went on to Switzerland and earned his Doctor der Natur-Philosophie (Dr. Phil.) For Science and Nature at the University of Zürich in 1919.
